RIP ROARING READERS

The theme for Rip Roaring Readers for March will be "The Cat in the Hat reads books just like that. Can you?" We once again encourage our Southeast students to read at least 15 minutes for 15 days during the month of March. A reading calendar has been attached to the newsletter for parents to initial to record the number of days students have read and send back on Mon., April 5. Get ready for a month of reading FUN!

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Children entering Kindergarten classes next fall in the Waverly-Shell Rock Elementary Schools are being asked to register March 3 & 4. Children must be five years old by September 15, 2010, to attend Kindergarten. Registration hours will be from 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM and will be held at Southeast Elementary School for all children who will be attending Kindergarten classes at any of the Waverly Elementary Schools.

When you register, you will need to provide proof of age (birth certificate or baptism certificate) and immunization records.

The Round-up experience for Southeast students has been scheduled from 9:00-11:00 a.m. or 1:00-3:00 on April 26 and 27. A reminder note with time and location will be sent through the mail. Parents are responsible for their child's transportation during kindergarten round-up.

From Our School Nurse

Kindergarten registration is fast approaching. Your child must be five years old by September 15, 2010 to attend kindergarten. Registration will be held at Southeast Elementary School for Waverly students on Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4. You will need to provide proof of age (birth certificate, hospital certificate) and immunization records when you register.

Your child will need to have state required immunization boosters before entering kindergarten. A new Iowa law also requires children entering kindergarten to have a blood lead test as well as a dental screening. If you need assistance finding a health care provider in the area, please feel free to contact Jaime Robbins, W-SR School Nurse at 352-3630.

Nachos and Numbers

Don’t miss this fun family event! Return your reservation slip today, and sign up for the door prize when you arrive!

BUS ZONE

Please remember that the driveway in front of the building is reserved for bus traffic before and after school. Between the times of 8:05 – 8:25 a.m. and 2:50 – 3:20 p.m., the inner circle driveway must be kept free of parked or standing cars so that our buses can drive into and park in the drop-off area. We have a number of buses for our preschool students that must pull in and turn around so safety is a concern. Parents may drop students off at the curb along 4th St., SE by the sidewalk that leads up to the building or other adjacent street areas.

READING PASSPORT

From the Library

The third and fourth grade children of Southeast School have been busy throughout the winter months discovering the Iowa Children’s Choice books. They’ve been collecting stamps in their passports for each new book read. A goal was set and those students who met that goal will celebrate by attending the International Food Fair Luncheon held in the library on Monday, March 8th. Foods from around the world will be served. If your child qualifies for the Food Fair, s/he will bring home an invitation to help provide food or assistance on that day. Thank you to Mrs. Kittleson, Mrs.Meyer, and parents, for encouraging your children to read!

Thinking Skills with Mrs. Buxton

Marilynn Buxton, Gifted and Talented instructor, enjoys doing whole class instruction in all 4th-6th grade classrooms. Through a variety of activities, she shows students how thinking skills apply to core subjects and real life. This year, she taught Creative Thinking in 4th and 5th grades. The basic skills are fluency (many ideas), flexibility (different types of ideas), originality (unique ideas) and elaboration (details about ideas). You can reinforce these skills by additional practice at home. Metacognition (being aware of one’s thinking) can improve behavior, decision making and problem solving skills. Your son or daughter should be able to demonstrate this process.

First, create or use a real situation that requires making a decision or solving a problem.

Next, brainstorm many possible ideas or solutions to the situation.

Then, think of several criteria that can be used to evaluate the situation.

Finally, rank order the ideas or solutions using each criterion

Sample:

Your family is planning a week-long vacation. List a wide variety of areas you could visit and activities you could do. Think of many unique ways to spend your family vacation.

The four rules for brainstorming include: not judging ideas when they are said, having many ideas, hitchhiking off others’ ideas, and thinking of wild and unique ideas. AFTER brainstorming, then the group may discuss the ideas and choose to eliminate some.

Use an evaluation chart to rate your ideas. The idea that best fits a criterion receives a score of 5. The next best receives a score of 4, then 3, 2, and 1. After evaluating all five criteria, add the scores going across. The highest score is your best idea according to the criteria you used and the way you rank ordered them.

Criteria:     1 – Which idea will most affordable?

2 – Which idea will be most acceptable to kids in the family?

3 – Which idea will be the most fun for everyone in the family?

4 – Which idea will be most acceptable to the parents?

5 – Which idea will most fit our family’s interests?
